About this project
beSALT brings daily liturgy, Bible readings, saints, homilies and an examination of conscience into a native Catholic iOS app. Onboarding, reminders, streaks and achievements help turn reading and reflection into a daily habit.
The project connects four parts: a SwiftUI app, a Bun API built with ElysiaJS, an Astro landing page and an AI content-generation worker. The backend uses PostgreSQL with Drizzle ORM and Redis caching; the API, database and worker infrastructure runs on Railway.
The app uses observable state, native navigation and Keychain credential storage. Authentication lets people start with an anonymous account tied to their device and later connect Apple or Google. RevenueCat manages offerings, purchases and premium access in coordination with the backend.
A daily Railway job loads the day's liturgy, readings and homily to generate reflection and examination-of-conscience questions through the OpenAI API. The worker checks required source content and skips questions that already exist, allowing reruns without duplicating completed generation. The API serves the resulting content to the app's sessions.
By September 2026, beSALT brought together 73 Bible books, over 37K verses and a full year of liturgy. More than 880 reflection and examination-of-conscience questions connect those readings to everyday life, bringing content and guidance together to support each day of a person's spiritual journey.
